Interactive media has developed out of traditional media (sound, video and television, for example) to include all digitalised media forms, such as websites, CD-roms, DVDs, games, simulations and installations, interactive television and toys and mobile phones. All these media forms are distinguished by their interactivity, a concept which is central to UEL's BA Hons Interactive Media. Interactive media includes design, production and management skills, bringing together interfaces, media content and scripting for interactivity, as well as concepts and theories for understanding human and bodily engagement with interactive media.

The field of interactive media is a buoyant area of commercial, creative and critical practice. Interactive media industries are significant areas of employment; large media companies have interactive departments which require skills in the specific area of interactive media. Interactive media graduates are skilled in interactive project management, in the ability to communicate and collaborate with creative and technical teams, are familiar with interactive media tools and practices, are expert in interaction design, usability design, experience design and understand the socio-cultural context in which new media emerge. They can expect to find work as web producers, dynamic content managers, designers, project managers, interactive content researchers/editors, in large or small-scale production companies, as freelancers, with general or specialist roles.
