Our School offers an extensive and well-supported programme of PhD studies. In the area of interactive media, we have supervision expertise in:
We support PhD study using a range of methodologies, and some of us have extensive experience supporting
PhDs by creative practice, most notably the SMARTlab Centre, which has a history
of guiding prestigious, international artists towards the completion of their
doctoral studies. To find out more about the specific expertise of interactive
media staff, see the staff pages above, or visit the staff pages of our School
website at www.uel.ac.uk/ssmcs/staff.
To apply for PhD study, contact our doctoral student administrator Gillian Perkins. You will be asked to complete an application form and provide a 1000-word research proposal, two references (at least one academic) and copies of your degree certificates and transcript. At this stage, you can specify preferred supervisors if you have already discussed your interests with a member of staff. Once accepted to study for a research degree, students are each assigned a supervisory team (minimum of two staff per student). The School organises a number of activities, including research seminars, at which postgraduate students and staff present work in progress, a programme of external speakers, to which all postgraduates are invited, and regular in-house training workshops. In addition, there are informal social gatherings so that research students have the opportunity to meet each other away from their desks.
Applicants will normally have a first or upper second class degree or equivalent, or comparable professional or research experience. Applications from overseas and EU students are welcomed. Students whose first language is not English should normally have achieved a score of 7.0 in IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or equivalent. Eligibility for students without degree-equivalent qualifications will be assessed on the basis of a short essay and statement. Places will be offered after a successful interview with a staff member.
